Background removal, up close
How the one-click background remover works, where it shows up, what it costs, and the images it handles well (and badly).
Background removal strips the background off an uploaded image and leaves you a clean subject on transparency. It's the cheapest AI tool and the one your customers reach for most — a phone photo of a pet, a logo on a white rectangle, a product shot with a busy shelf behind it. One click, background gone.
This page is the practical version of the Wrangler AI overview: what it actually does to an image, and when to expect a clean cut versus a fiddly one.
What it does
Feed it an image, it returns the same image with the background made transparent. The subject — the person, pet, product, or logo — stays; everything the model reads as backdrop becomes a transparent PNG.
Because the result is transparent, it composites cleanly onto whatever's behind it in the design: a background colour, a pattern, another image, the blank product itself. No white box, no halo.

Where it shows up
In the template builder. Select an image placeholder and turn background removal on in the AI tools section of the properties panel. You can also run it on an asset you're placing yourself — clean up a logo once, save it to the template, done.
On the storefront customizer. When it's enabled on a template, a shopper who uploads an image sees a Remove background action in the toolbar after selecting their image. They tap it, the cut happens in place, and the design keeps moving.
Leave it on for almost any product that takes customer photo uploads. It's what turns a messy phone snap into something printable.
What it costs
$0.005 per image — flat, at any volume. Half a cent. It doesn't share the volume-discount counter with the generation tools; it's just always half a cent. Customer runs bill to your account, the same as every AI tool. See AI usage and billing.
At that price you rarely need to ration it, but the per-session limit still applies if you set one — handy for stopping a bored shopper from running it forty times on the same photo.
Auto-clean on generated images
If you're using image generation too, note that generated images come background-removed by default — the generator hands off a clean subject without a separate removal step or a separate charge. That auto-clean is a setting on the generation tool, not this one. This tool is for the images your customers upload.
What it handles well — and what it doesn't
The model is strong on clear subjects with a readable edge:
- Handles well — people, pets, products, and logos shot against a plain or clearly-different background. Good lighting. A subject that stands out from what's behind it.
- Gets fiddly — fine hair and fur wisps, transparent or glassy objects, and low-contrast shots where the subject and background are similar tones. It'll still cut, but the edge may need a forgiving design (a busy background behind it hides a lot).
A cut you don't love? Re-uploading the same image gives the same result — the model is deterministic, not random. The fix is a better source image: more contrast between subject and background, better light, less clutter. A cleaner input beats a second attempt every time.
Common pitfalls
- Expecting a perfect hair edge on a print-ready file. For tight edges, feed it a cleaner shot rather than hoping the second run differs.
- Removing a background you wanted to keep. For posters and full-bleed products, leave the background on — turn the tool off for that template.
- Assuming it fixes resolution. Removal doesn't add pixels. A small, soft upload stays small and soft, minus its background. Set minimum-dimension rules if that matters (see Troubleshooting).
