Editing a customer's design on an order
Fix a typo or a slipped image on a placed order, regenerate the print artwork, and keep the customer's original safe.
Sometimes a customer's design needs a correction after they've placed their order — a typo in a name, an image that's slipped off the print area, a last-minute change they've emailed you about. Edit design opens their design in the same editor the customer used, lets you fix it, and regenerates the print artwork. No cancelling the order, no asking the customer to reorder.
Opening the editor
- In the app, go to Orders, then click Order files on the order you want to change.
- Each customized line item shows its cart thumbnail, cart preview, and final print artwork. Click Edit design on the line you want to change. If the button is greyed out, hover it for the reason — see when editing isn't available.
- The editor opens with the customer's design exactly as they ordered it. You have the same tools the customer had — text, images, graphics, colours, AI tools — for that product's template.
You are editing a live order. The caution bar under the header is a reminder: saving replaces the print artwork your fulfilment process uses for this line item. The customer's original design is always kept and can be restored.
Saving your changes
- Click Save changes in the top-right of the editor.
- Confirm Save and regenerate artwork. The dialog tells you which version you're creating (v2 for the first edit, v3 for the next) and which order and item it applies to.
- You're returned to Order files. The final artwork shows a Generating… placeholder while it re-renders — usually under a minute.
What happens when you save:
- The print artwork re-renders from your edited design, for every output file on the line (e.g. Front and Back).
- Edited files get a version suffix so they're unmistakable in downloads and your fulfilment system — e.g.
CUST-Front-a1b2c3d4-edited-v2.png. The customer's original files keep their plain names. - The line shows an Edited badge, and the order is tagged
px-design-editedin Shopify so you can find edited orders from the orders list. - The cart thumbnail and cart preview stay as the customer saw them — only the print artwork changes. Regenerate them from Order files if you want them updated too.
Leave the editor without saving and nothing changes — the Exit button asks before discarding edits.
The original design is never lost
On an edited line, the final artwork column shows two things:
- Current — edited — the artwork fulfilment will use, with its version suffix.
- Original (as purchased) — click to expand. The customer's untouched files, still available to preview and download at any time.
From the Original section you can also:
- Restore original — makes the customer's artwork the fulfilment artwork again, instantly (nothing re-renders). Your edited version stays in the order's history.
- Edit from original — starts a fresh edit from the customer's design instead of your current edit. Saving it becomes the fulfilment artwork, with the next version number.
Downloads, exports, and integrations
Everything that hands artwork to fulfilment uses the current version automatically:
- Download final artwork (the order zip) contains the edited files for edited lines and originals for untouched lines.
- The Artwork Export API and the order's
px_customization.artwork_filesmetafield always reflect the current files. - A full audit trail of every edit and restore is stored on the order in the
px_customization.design_editsmetafield.
The -edited-v2 suffix in the filename is your at-a-glance signal that a file isn't the customer's original.
Items that share one design
If a customer added several variants of the same design in one go — the same artwork on a Medium and a Large — each line item has its own artwork. Editing one line updates only that line; the app shows a note on shared designs to remind you. Edit each line individually if the change should apply to all of them.
When editing isn't available
- The order (or line) has been fulfilled — the artwork has likely gone to print, so editing and restoring are locked.
- The order is older than 90 days — designs are past the edit window.
- No saved design data — rare; usually an order that predates design snapshots.
The Edit design button's tooltip always tells you which of these applies.
Good to know
- Edits are made by you, on your store — the app doesn't notify the customer. If the change came from a customer request, reply to them as you normally would.
- If two staff edit the same line at once, the last save wins. Each save is a complete version; nothing is merged.
- Restoring the original never deletes your edits. Earlier versions are retained in the order's audit trail.
